Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move people to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with startling heroism.
Wow! This is another outstanding story by one of my favourite authors! I loved And The Mountains Echoed, but I loved this more and cannot wait to read The Kite Runner by Khaled. Readers be warned this story will have you feeling a range of emotions from, happy, sad, angry to love throughout! I awarded this story five stars as I was hooked throughout, really enjoyed it and personally wanted more (always a good sign). A Thousand Splendid Suns also has the perfect heart warming ending! I cannot express how much you should read this powerful story, it really is a one of a kind story that is unforgettable and will stay in your heart for a long time. However, some readers may find this an emotional read, I did in certain parts! I would highly recommend it to you all if you have not read it already, you will not be disappointed! I will miss this story. A Thousand Splendid Suns is the perfect story for readers who enjoy an outstanding bestseller, contemporary, war and historical fiction novel. Enjoy. I did.
